A Study in Stones

Coloured stones, crystals and small jewellery objects arranged on a muted green surface in sunlight, with strong shadows and a diagonal band of shade

I have collected stones for as long as I can remember.

For their textures, their colours, and the time it has taken for them to form.

They change with the light. A surface that seems dull in one moment begins to glow in another. Colours appear and disappear. Details I had not noticed before suddenly become visible.

They also change in the company of other stones.

A stone placed on its own has a certain presence. Beside another, I notice something different: a colour, an inclusion, an edge. I can spend hours moving them around, bringing some together and separating others.

The light moves through my studio with the sun. As it reaches different stones, something else catches my attention. I love photographing them, watching how the same stone changes from one image to the next.

Sometimes an arrangement becomes the beginning of a piece of jewellery. I cast a stone’s form in silver, or try to recreate something of its surface.

Some stones are so precious to me that I cannot bring myself to use them. Others are still waiting for an idea that feels good enough.
