Lost in the Forest

Moss-covered forest floor beneath dark branches, with sunlight on tall trees beyond

My mother loved mushroom hunting. I never understood how she could become so absorbed in it.

Then, a few years ago, I became the same.

There is a certain mystery about mushrooms. Neither plants nor animals. Some are poisonous, others a delicacy. You need to know what you are picking.

It is a treasure hunt. You find one, and suddenly the whole forest seems full of possibilities. A little further. Behind that tree. Just one more look.

I can lose hours like this.

I wish I had discovered this sooner. All those forests. All those mushroom hunts I could have gone on.

Afterwards, there are hours of cleaning, but it is deeply rewarding. Each one is a little work of art. And they taste even better.
